metropole coffee house, 33 newington road, is comprised of a large room with high ceilings and booths (one of my favorite things) around two of the edges. a mix of large and smaller home-kitchen style tables and chairs in the middle and well worn wooden floors give it a relaxed feel.
we stopped in for breakfast which was nice and the menu looks good for all meals with lots of choice and good prices.
they use edinburgh-based brodies coffee which is fair trade.
the cappuccino was very weak. in fact the chocolate on top provided more flavour than the coffee itself but the milk and temperature were good.
in contrast the flat white was much more flavoursome due to the double-shot with a dark roast bitterness that was a bit much for me. again the milk was very good.
for us the coffee flavour and strength let the coffee down more than the barista expertise. a change to better bean could make the world of difference.
service was very friendly with staff stopping by the regulars and having a good old chat.
a really nice place to hang out and we'll be back but the coffee gets a low 'good' rating for now.
