Christmas Photo Outtakes.

A few outtakes from our Christmas photo session a few weeks ago. And come back on Monday...I finally got around to taking photos of the house and plan to overwhelm you with all of them.

Happy Friday!

peter's yard - stockbridge

peter's yard stockbridge at 3 deanhaugh street stockbridge, is a delight and is the best coffee shop in stockbridge. this shop lives up to the excellent standards already set in their peter's yard quartermile outlet.

their expert baristas pay great attention to their coffee as shown by the flat white pictured. they use local supplier artisan roast and prepare lush soft milk lovingly coaxed into the perfect small-sized cup.

other options at peter's yard include a great array of fresh bread, pastries, salads, artisan chocolate and icecream and pizzas...and they supply wine too!

this is a great spot to drop in for coffee and food alike. you can also pick up all options take-away.

Disneyland.

This past week we went to Disneyland with our good friends Ryan and Dani (and their adorable girls).

The night of the first day, Emilia told me that she was ready to leave because "it's so boring." When I asked her what "boring" meant, she told me that "it's just a long long day." She did warm up to the whole experience over the course of four days, and even let us take a photo of her with Belle (she was adamant about not getting photos with characters).

It was fun and overwhelming and crazy and everything a trip to Disneyland should be.

(Sorry for the photo heavy post. It's really for the grandparents.)

wellington coffee

wellington coffee, downstairs on the corner of hanover and george streets makes fantastic coffee. they've been using a smaller independent coffee roaster square mile for some years now - a london outfit - and change their beans with the seasons.

all the friendly folk behind the machine produce consistently excellent coffee. i relish the flat white (short, double shot latte) and trusty partner the capuccino. the coffee smells amazing, the flavours combine strength with delicacy, it's temperature-perfect, has luxuriously smooth milk and is all served up in a regular cup-size.

along with great coffee, it's a cute little place and the staff are friendly.

all the baristas really know their art and clearly love their coffee. they're certainly doing the right thing by square mile and square mile by them.

- coffee: squaremile plus sometime guests
- coolness: view to fife from outdoor tables (in good weather!)

castello coffee

castello coffee is at 7a castle street, just off princes street.

friendly service, lunch options of soups, sandwiches, baguettes, snacks and great coffee.

even in rainy weather you can sit outside under umbrellas and watch the world go by.there are also tables and chairs inside for chilly times.

castello use the fabulous allpress espresso, a new zealand outfit that also trades out of london and sydney. they buy direct from small estates and co-ops so the actual beans change regularly and are seasonal. castello's baristas will always give you a lovely coffee, and you get variety - perfect.

it's also excellently placed to grab a coffee and picnic and then pop across the road to the princes street gardens under the looming edinburgh castle.

a great addition to edinburgh's coffee scene!

- coffee: allpress espresso
- coolness: castle views from their outdoor seating

World Diabetes Day.

Today is world awareness diabetes day.

Having two boys with type one diabetes, has had a huge impact on our lives. My day is full of blood sugar  tests, pump changes and alarms.

Type one diabetes is an autoimmune disease. This simply means that the bodies own immune system attacks the body and kills of cells. In type one diabetes, the immune system attacks the pancreas and kills of the insulin producing islets.

At this stage there is no known cure for type one diabetes. A person with it has to inject insulin every day. They are dependent on insulin to live. Even though they don't have any cure, there are advances been made to finding better ways to treat and live with diabetes.

Blood glucose monitoring is possible. We check the boys blood sugar level around 8-10 times a day. We can give insulin as needed through the pump. We can check if the boys have ketones in their blood. When Tom was diagnosed and in intensive care, they sent someone from the lab to collect blood to see what level ketones were at. It took time for them to tell us what level the ketones were. Now I put  a strip in the blood meter and know within 10 seconds if either of my boys have ketones.

There is also continuous blood glucose monitoring and an artificial pancreas. We don't have these yet but they have changed the whole lifestyle of people living with type one diabetes.

These advances are great but still we pray for a cure for both our boys and all the other children (and adults) that suffer from type one diabetes. One of my hopes is to say one day, my boys use to have type one diabetes but  now they have been cured. I will not support any organisation or group though that puts funds into embryonic stem cell research. This is immoral and has not shown any promise at all. I really don't believe we can get a cure with ESC. Adult stem cells have shown much more promise anyway.

You can read a few posts I have written against embryonic stem cell research at the following links:

Why I am against Embryonic stem cell research.

No President Obama!!!!!!!!!!!

Lies about embryonic stem cells.

Media fails to report accurately on Embryonic Stem cells.

Happy Friday!!!

Happy Friday!

In case you haven't noticed, a few things are changing over here. After years of not liking my branding for 45wall, I finally landed on a look and logo that I am incredibly happy with (and thanks to my friends who gave great feedback). I'm also working on some new goods for the shop that I plan to have up in the next couple of weeks, so stay tuned.

And yes...there will be a house tour. Eventually.

We're doing Christmas card photos of the the girl tomorrow, so last night she and I worked on picking out what she's to wear. She was quite cooperative...and maybe a bit of a ham.

Have a great weekend!

artisan roast - broughton st

artisan roast, 57 broughton st, is among edinburgh's best.

passion, aroma, flavour, milk texture, temperature and cup size - all fantastic.

my personal favourite is a flat white which is a double espresso in a normal, tea/coffee sized cup. not a mug or an oversize cup - just a nice, normal cup that holds the perfect quantity. my trusty partner prefers the cappuccino.

the milk has the lovely thick texture of expertly stretched milk, enhancing the complex nutty, choclatey, smokey, caramel coffeeness without a hint of bitterness. the flavour is as good as the smell. you can choose from a range of sprinkles for the top of your froth including chilli or cardamon chocolate, if that is to your liking.

artisan roast their own coffee beans and supply other coffee shops. the picture of their roaster below was taken before they moved it to glasgow.

apart from having some of the best coffee around, you can also take some beans or ground coffee home - ground to your exact specifications.

- coffee: their own roast
- coolness: coffee ground to your specs to take home

Halloween!

Thankful Thursday.

Today is the feast of All Saints. Our parish church is All Saints so it is our feast day today. We had mass tonight followed by a shared BBQ. It was a great night with good food and good company. I am thankful to God for the fellowship we all had.

I am also thankful for all the saints and the example they are to us in living  the gospel message.

I am also thankful for all my friends and family that encourage me in living for God and a life of faith.

Therese.
